Knead, fill, and fold pirogi the way Grandma Marija taught

A hands-on pirogi-making class in Slavonia limited to eight guests, where you knead dough and shape two traditional fillings (potato with onion, and fruit jam) using recipes inherited from the guide's grandmother. The workshop runs three hours and includes the meal you make, wine pairings, welcome rakija, and any leftover pirogi to take home.

The experience

Pirogi arrived in Slavonia through migration from Galicia in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and this kitchen keeps that lineage alive. You'll work entirely by hand (no machines, no shortcuts) rolling dough and folding each piece the way it was done before measurements existed. The recipe comes from memory and feel, not from a card. Two fillings anchor the day: creamy mashed potatoes with onion and black pepper for the savory version, and homemade fruit jam for the sweet one. Everything uses local, seasonal ingredients, many straight from the garden.

The three-hour workshop stays small, maximum eight people, so the kitchen stays warm and the instruction stays personal. While the pirogi cook, you sit together, share stories, and eat the first warm bites of what you've made. The meal includes both types of pirogi paired with Krauthaker wine. Two glasses per adult come with the class. You also get a welcome drink of traditional rakija or homemade liquors, coffee or tea, and any leftover pirogi wrapped to take home. A modern twist appears each time (one day homemade ice cream, another fresh fruit from the orchard or edible flowers), so the tradition stays alive instead of frozen.

The guide speaks English, Croatian, or Serbian. Children from age one are welcome, though infants sit on an adult's lap. Vegan and vegetarian fillings are available if you request them when booking. Public transportation runs nearby if you're traveling without a car.
