The experience

You arrive at the activity center and start with the zipline: 11 platforms strung through the canopy at different heights, each one a step up in speed and exposure. A guide walks you through the setup and the technique before you clip in. The platforms themselves are the draw: the rush of moving through the treetops, the view opening up as you climb higher. After you come down, the day pivots to recovery: horseback riding on trails where trained staff help you mount and lead the way, then a mountain waterslide where a guide gears you up and shows you how to use it safely.

The centerpiece of the afternoon is the hot springs and mud baths fed by the volcano. The mineral-rich mud is warm and thick. You wade into the hot springs after to rinse off. Between activities, you visit a working trapiche, a sugar cane mill, to see how the locals make their own product. Lunch is gourmet and included, so you eat without leaving the grounds.
