The experience
You start at the Los Suenos Canopy Tour office with 10 ziplines strung across the rainforest canopy. The second-to-last cable is the longest in the area at 2,400 feet: nearly half a mile of open air. Between cables, you cross 12 suspended platforms built into the trees. After the final descent, the office serves pineapple and watermelon while you catch your breath.
Back at the Jaco office, bilingual guides walk you through ATV safety and gear. If you're nervous about riding solo, tandem ATVs and Mules let you ride as a passenger. Then the engines start and you climb toward the rainforest mountains. The trail cuts through riverbeds and rocky terrain, winding upward until you reach the peak. On a clear day, the view spans the Pacific from Jaco to Manuel Antonio, the Nicoya Peninsula, and Puntarenas: the best vista in the area. The descent takes you past Cascada del Zorro waterfall, where you can splash through the water, and through lush rainforest and rolling hills that few visitors ever reach.
The whole combo runs 4 hours. Pickup from your Jaco-area hotel is included, and your guide speaks both English and Spanish. You'll need closed-toed shoes, clothes you don't mind getting dirty, and a swimsuit for the waterfall. ATV riders must be at least 16 with a valid driver's license. Younger passengers can ride tandem. A $500 credit-card hold per two vehicles is required at check-in to cover any damage, and the hold is released once the ATV is returned in the same condition.
Is this one for you?The combo stacks two high-energy activities back-to-back over 4 hours, so you'll need moderate fitness and comfort with both heights and off-road riding. If you're splitting time between beach and adventure, this packs both the aerial thrill and the mountain terrain into one morning or afternoon.
