The Experience

We were already bouncing along in the back of this tractor before I even realized how high we’d climbed above Jaco Beach. The air smelled like wet leaves and something sweet — maybe guava? Our guide, Diego, grinned as he handed out harnesses and gave us a quick “don’t worry, you’ll love it” pep talk. I could see the Pacific peeking through the trees. My hands were sweating a bit (I’m not great with heights), but honestly, when you’re clipped in and suddenly flying over the canopy on that first zip line cable — well, you forget about being nervous. There’s just wind in your face and the sound of birds yelling at each other somewhere below.

I didn’t expect to laugh so much on the ATV part. You get two hours to tear around these muddy jungle trails — and I mean muddy. One of us got stuck in a puddle so deep it swallowed half a boot (Diego just shook his head and helped dig us out). The route takes you past little river crossings, up hills slick from last night’s rain, and every now and then you catch this wild view of Jaco’s coastline that sort of stops you for a second. It’s loud — engines, bugs buzzing — but there are these quieter moments too when you just hear water moving somewhere close.

Afterwards, we sat under this open-air shelter with cold water and fruit (I was covered in mud but didn’t care). There was an option for a casado lunch if you wanted it — rice, beans, plantains, all that good stuff — but honestly I was still running on adrenaline. Oh, heads up: they really do check for a credit card before letting you drive the ATV. Not my favorite part but makes sense I guess.

I keep thinking about that feeling right after the last zip line platform — legs shaky but happy, sun starting to come out again over Los Suenos. If you want to see Costa Rica from way up high and then get totally filthy down low… yeah, this is probably your day.
