The experience
The Tarcoles River is one of Costa Rica's premier spots to watch American crocodiles in their natural habitat without risk. Your boat (covered, stable and sized for small groups) stays on the water for an hour while your bilingual guide points out crocodiles of all sizes, scarlet macaws, herons and other birds moving through the dense mangrove channels of the Guacalillo swamp. The river's narrow passages let you get close enough for wildlife photography, and the guide explains what you're seeing as you move through the landscape.
After the river, you walk into Carara National Park, a transitional forest where species from both dry and humid tropical zones overlap: a rarity on the Central Pacific coast that makes it a hotspot for biodiversity. The guided trail is easy and takes you past monkeys, toucans, coatis and butterflies. The park sits 90 kilometers south of San José, 2 kilometers below the Río Grande de Tárcoles bridge on the Costanera Sur highway. Your guide explains the ecology as you move through the forest, and the park's reputation for birdwatching (especially scarlet macaws, an endangered species) means you'll have chances to spot birds most visitors miss.
The tour also includes a city drive through Puntarenas town, where you see the fish market, the oldest church and the ferry terminal. A stop at a local fruit stand lets you taste tropical fruits or grab a smoothie, and you'll visit a souvenir shop with free WiFi where you can grab one of the region's best coffees. Transport is by air-conditioned minivan with pickup from your hotel and drop-off when the day ends.

Top questions
What languages is the guide in?
Live guide in English and Spanish.
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Child (3 to 12 years); Infant (under 3).
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24h before the start.
What size crocodiles will I actually see on the Tarcoles River?
American crocodiles of all sizes live in the Tarcoles River, and the boat gets close enough for you to see and photograph them clearly. The river is one of the best places in Costa Rica to observe them safely in their natural habitat, and your guide will point out the different species and behaviors as you cruise the mangrove channels.
How long is the walk through Carara National Park?
The guided walk through Carara is easy and fits into the overall 5- to 6-hour tour. The park's transitional forest zone is compact but dense with wildlife: monkeys, toucans, coatis and butterflies are common sightings, and the guide explains the unique ecology where dry and humid tropical species meet.
Does the tour include food and drinks?
Food and drinks are not included, but the tour stops at a local fruit stand where you can buy tropical fruits or a smoothie, and at a souvenir shop with a café serving Costa Rican coffee. You're welcome to bring your own snacks and water for the day.
What if I'm arriving by cruise ship? Does this tour work for me?
Yes, the tour accommodates cruise ship passengers. At booking, provide your ship name, docking time, disembarkation time and re-boarding time so the guide can time the return to the port. Tours departing from San José do not include the monkey house stop or Puntarenas city tour, but the Puntarenas departure includes both.
What should I wear and bring?
Comfortable clothes are recommended for the forest walk and the boat ride. Bring sunscreen, a hat and water. The minivan is air-conditioned but you'll be exposed on the boat and in the park. A camera or phone is useful for wildlife photography, and the souvenir shop has WiFi if you need to upload photos.
