Birdwatching at Carara National Park

- Visit strategic birdwatching stops
- Spot and identify bird species
- Observe scarlet macaws and capuchins
- Learn bird facts from guides
The experience
The tour starts early (pickup in Quepos or Manuel Antonio begins at 4:30 am), because the birds are most active in the first hours after dawn. Your guide is licensed by the Costa Rican Tourism Chamber and knows the park's strategic stops, the spots where certain species reliably appear. You'll carry binoculars of your own and have access to the tour's top-line Swarovski spotting scope, which lets you see detail and behavior you'd miss with binoculars alone. The guide points out field marks (the markings and behaviors that separate one species from another), so you learn to identify what you're seeing, whether it's a trogon, a motmot, a flycatcher or one of the hummingbirds that move through the canopy.
Carara's transitional forest is where dry-forest and wet-forest species overlap, which is why it holds one of the highest bird counts in Costa Rica. The park also holds the largest population of scarlet macaws on the central Pacific coast. White-faced capuchins and howler monkeys move through the same habitat, so you may spot them during the same stops. The guide will do the spotting work, but you control what you focus on and how long you watch each bird. Remember that animals aren't held in captivity (the park is not a zoo), so sightings depend on what's active that morning, not a guarantee.
After the morning birding, you'll have a typical Costa Rican casado: rice, beans, salad, and your choice of pork, chicken, fish or vegetarian protein. All photos and videos taken through the spotting scope are yours to keep. Bring insect repellent and avoid bright-colored shirts or pants, which make birds spot you more easily. The tour runs six hours total. If weather turns bad, the operator will reschedule or refund.
