Walk between two ecosystems where scarlet macaws nest in ancient trees

Step-by-step itinerary
Private guided tour of Carara Park
- Meet expert naturalist guide
- Walk trails in lush vegetation
- Discover ancient trees
- Spot scarlet macaws and wildlife
- Enjoy nature and photography
The Experience
The park sits at an ecological crossroads: trails pass through dry forest on one side and humid jungle on the other, which is why the wildlife density here is unusual. A naturalist guide leads you along the paths, pointing out the trees, birds and animals as they appear. Scarlet macaws are the draw—they nest in the tall trees and move through the canopy in pairs—but the walk also turns up howler monkeys, sloths, iguanas, poison dart frogs and morpho butterflies. Four hours gives you time to move at a pace that lets you actually see things instead of rushing past them.
You get picked up from your hotel, driven to the park entrance, and walk the trails with your guide for the bulk of the morning or afternoon. A bottle of water comes with you. The guide speaks English or Spanish, and can adjust the route and timing to match your pace and interests—if you want to spend extra time photographing birds or waiting for monkeys to move through a particular tree, there is no schedule pushing you forward. The trails are walkable for most fitness levels, and strollers are fine if you are traveling with small children.
