The Experience
Mist clung to my jacket as we stepped onto the trail—Monteverde’s air always feels cool and a bit earthy, especially early in the morning. Our guide, a local with years of stories tucked into his backpack, paused near an old avocado tree. He whispered, “This is where the action happens.” Sure enough, a flash of green—a resplendent quetzal—darted between branches. I never realized wild avocados were such a magnet for birds here.
You’ll hear more than you see at first: distant howler monkeys, the soft crunch of leaves underfoot, and sometimes the faint call of a bellbird echoing through the canopy. The guide set up his spotting scope right away—honestly, I’d never managed to get such clear photos through my phone before. We took our time along the winding paths, stopping whenever someone spotted something new—a tiny orchid clinging to mossy bark or a line of leafcutter ants hauling their treasure home.
