Summary

Guided Rainforest Horseback Riding and Wildlife Boat Trip

You’ll ride gentle horses through real Costa Rican rainforest, led by locals who know every bird call and hidden path. Then switch gears with a boat trip on the Tarcoles River—watching crocodiles sunbathe and macaws flash red against green trees. If you want an easy way to see both jungle and river wildlife in one day from your cruise stop, this is it.

experience

What’s the experience like?

The air felt thick and sweet as we left the cruise port behind, windows down just enough to catch the scent of wet earth. Our guide, Luis, pointed out tiny roadside fruit stands—mangoes stacked high, a few stray dogs napping in the shade. By the time we reached the ranch near Playa Herradura, I could already hear birds calling from somewhere deep in the trees.

Saddling up was easy—these horses know their way around. The trail wound through dense green, sunlight flickering through giant leaves overhead. At one point, Luis stopped us to show a line of leafcutter ants hauling bits of jungle across our path. We passed a cool stream where you could dip your hands if you wanted; I did, and the water was icy even though it was warm out. The guides really knew their stuff—naming plants I’d never seen before and spotting a sloth tucked up high in a cecropia tree.

After about two hours riding, we hopped back into the van for a short drive to the Tarcoles River. The boat ride was something else—quiet except for the engine and the splash of herons fishing along the muddy banks. Crocodiles lounged on sandbars like they owned the place (they probably do). Our captain slowed so we could get photos and pointed out scarlet macaws flying overhead. It all felt pretty wild but safe at the same time.
