The Experience

I didn’t expect to smell coffee on a boat in the middle of the Gulf of Nicoya, but there we were—our guide Marco pouring it into little cups while everyone leaned over the rail, scanning for dolphins. I’d never seen so many people go quiet at once. The water was glassy that morning, except when someone would shout “there!” and a fin would break the surface. It’s weird how you can feel both excited and kind of peaceful at the same time. Marco told us stories about a shipwreck nearby—he pointed out this rusty bit sticking up at low tide, like a secret only locals know about. I think he said it was from World War II? I probably should’ve listened more closely but honestly I was distracted by the sun on my arms and the sound of everyone laughing when someone tried (and failed) to spot a monkey on Negritos Island.

We passed close enough to Negritos to see trees tangled up over sharp rocks—Marco slowed down and we all craned our necks hoping for spider monkeys. Someone spotted one (or claimed they did), but I only saw a flash of brown fur before it disappeared. Then suddenly we were anchoring near these rocky islets just before Tortuga Island for snorkeling. The water was cooler than I expected—clear enough that you could see fish darting around your legs if you stayed still long enough. My mask kept fogging up but I didn’t care; I kept thinking how salty everything tasted and how bright those blue fish looked against the rocks. There’s something about floating there with strangers that makes you feel oddly connected—I don’t know if that makes sense.

Afterward, we landed on Tortuga Island itself. The sand felt almost powdery underfoot, hot enough that I had to hop a bit until we reached some shade where fruit was waiting for us (pineapple so sweet it made my teeth hurt). Lunch came later—grilled fish for me, though there was chicken and veggie stuff too—and we sat at these picnic tables under palm trees with our feet still sandy. People sort of drifted off after eating; some napped, others walked along the beach or just stared out at the water like they couldn’t believe they were really here. I still think about that view sometimes—the color of the sky right above the island, almost too bright to look at straight on.
