The Experience

The first thing I noticed was the clink of glasses and that sort of sweet, grainy smell drifting out onto the sidewalk—like someone baking bread but with a bit more edge. We’d barely stepped inside our first stop when our guide, Jamie, handed us these little tasting glasses lined up like soldiers. He grinned and said, “Start light, end bold.” I tried to look like I knew what I was doing but honestly, I couldn’t tell a lager from an IPA until he explained it. There was a group of friends at the next table arguing about which beer tasted like grapefruit (it did, weirdly), and for a minute it felt like we’d just wandered into someone’s living room instead of a brewery in Vancouver.

After that first flight, we walked over to another spot—rain just starting up again because, well, Vancouver. The second brewery had this mural outside with bright colors that looked almost electric in the wet light. Inside was louder—music bouncing off metal tanks—and the brewer herself came over to pour our next round. She told us about the hops they use from just outside the city and laughed when I tried to pronounce “Simcoe.” Pretty sure I butchered it. Anyway, she had this way of talking about beer that made it sound like art instead of just something you drink after work.

The last place gave us a peek behind all those shiny tanks—Jamie led us right through the back where it smelled sharp and yeasty and kind of earthy all at once. He showed us how everything gets mixed and boiled and cooled down before it ever hits a glass. Standing there with steam rising around us (I got fog on my glasses), I realized how much goes into each pint. We sat down for one last tasting—my favorite was this dark one that tasted almost like coffee—and by then everyone was swapping stories about their worst hangover or best night out. Funny how quickly strangers turn into drinking buddies over three hours. Even now, sometimes when I catch that malty smell somewhere in town, I think back to that day.
