The experience
The tour starts before dawn. You're picked up in Banff or Canmore and driven to Moraine Lake, arriving 45 minutes before sunrise so you beat the shuttle crowds and claim the best vantage points. The guide (one of the owners who lives here year-round) sets you up with hot coffee, tea or hot chocolate, homemade banana bread and granola bars, then walks you through the lake's history and points out the best photo spots and short hikes while you wait for the light to change. You get two full hours at the lake, and the guide stays nearby if you want to warm up, ask questions or take a break.
From there, the group moves to Lake Louise for another two hours. This is the most photographed lake in the world, and the guide explains why: the turquoise water, the glacier backdrop, the way the light moves across it through the day. You can hike the shoreline, rent a canoe, visit the Fairmont hotel, or simply sit and absorb it. The guide walks you through the lake's history and what makes it special to locals, then lets you explore at your own pace. The whole tour runs seven hours from pickup to drop-off, and the 15-seater vehicle has large windows and air conditioning, so you're comfortable on the drive between lakes.
What sets this apart is that the guides are the owners. They're not seasonal staff cycling through. They live in Banff and know the parks' rhythms, the best light at each hour, which trails are worth the detour, and how to talk about conservation in a way that sticks. The small group cap of 12 means you're not jostling for space or waiting for stragglers, and the homemade snacks and blankets aren't afterthoughts. They're part of how the owners run the tour themselves.

Is this one for you?Seven hours is a full morning and early afternoon, so plan the rest of your day around an early start and a mid-afternoon return. If you want to see both lakes at their best light and have time to explore each one without rushing, this schedule is built for it. If you need a later departure or a shorter commitment, look for an afternoon option instead.

Top questions
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24h before the start.
How early do I need to wake up for this tour?
Pickup happens in the dark, timed so you arrive at Moraine Lake 45 minutes before sunrise. The exact time shifts with the season. Sunrise in summer is around 5:30 a.m., in winter closer to 8 a.m. The tour runs seven hours total, so you're back by mid-afternoon.
What is Moraine Lake actually like when you get there?
Moraine Lake sits at the base of the Valley of the Ten Peaks, a glacial lake with water so turquoise it looks unreal. The guide positions you to watch the sun rise directly onto those peaks, turning the rock gold and pink. You have two hours there, so you can hike the shoreline, sit still and photograph, or just stand with a hot drink and watch the light change.
Can I canoe at Lake Louise, or is it just looking?
Lake Louise has canoe rentals on-site, and you're free to rent one during your two hours there. Many people do. You can also hike the shoreline trail, visit the Fairmont Lake Louise hotel, or spend the time photographing. The guide doesn't dictate what you do. You choose how to spend the time.
What's included in the pickup, and where exactly do you pick up?
Pickup and drop-off are included from Banff or Canmore. You'll confirm your location when you book. The vehicle is a spacious 15-seater with large windows and air conditioning. The guide drives, and you travel between the two lakes as part of the tour time.
Are the hot drinks and snacks enough, or should I bring my own food?
The tour includes hot coffee, tea, hot chocolate, homemade banana bread and allergen-friendly granola bars. Many people bring their own lunch to eat at Lake Louise during the second stop. The vehicle has a cooler on board to store drinks and food you bring.
What if the weather is bad on the morning of the tour?
The tour runs in most weather. You'll have blankets and umbrellas provided. Rain or cloud cover can actually create dramatic light on the peaks. If conditions are severe enough that the operator cancels, you'll be notified and offered a reschedule or refund.
