Master the basics and ski the Rockies in one afternoon

A five-hour cross-country ski lesson in Lake Louise with a live English-speaking guide covers falling and getting back up, gliding, turning and stopping on easy terrain, plus a short tour. Participants must bring their own waxless skis, boots and poles (rentals available locally for $30–$65), pack lunch and warm layers, and be at least 14 years old. The lesson is not suitable for travelers with spinal injuries, pregnancy or cardiovascular concerns, and requires a signed waiver.

The experience

You arrive at Lake Louise with skis in hand and no idea how to use them. The guide meets you, walks through the orientation and waiver, then takes you onto the snow. The lesson starts with the fundamentals: how to fall without panic, how to get back up, how your body moves when you glide. You practice on easy terrain, learning to turn and stop before the group skis a short tour through the landscape. The whole thing takes five hours, and by the end you have the core skills.

Bring waxless Nordic skis, boots and poles. If you don't own them, rentals run about $30–$35 per person at Wilson Mountain Sports or Gear Up in Canmore, or $65 at the Chateau Lake Louise. Pack a day-pack with lunch, a thermos, mittens, a toque, a scarf and warm layers. You'll be out over the lunch hour. The guide is a live person who speaks English and knows the terrain. The group stays small enough that you get real instruction, not just a crowd moving downhill.

Weather and wildlife can cancel the tour: Environment Canada warnings or wildlife closures will shut it down. You'll sign a waiver and a COVID release form before you start. The minimum age is 14, and the operator notes this is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, pregnancy or poor cardiovascular health. The physical fitness level expected is high.

Top questions

What do I actually learn in a cross-country ski lesson?

The lesson covers falling and getting back up safely, gliding on flat terrain, turning and stopping: the core skills that let you move on skis without panic. You practice each one on easy ground before the guide takes the group on a short tour.

Do I need to own cross-country skis to book this?

No. Rentals are available in Lake Louise at Wilson Mountain Sports or Gear Up in Canmore for about $30–$35 per person, or at the Chateau Lake Louise for $65 per person. You'll need to arrange them separately before the lesson.

What should I pack for a five-hour ski lesson?

Bring a day-pack with lunch, a thermos, mittens, a toque, a scarf and warm layers. You'll be outside for the full five hours, including over lunch, so dress for cold and bring food and water.

Can the lesson be cancelled?

Yes. Environment Canada weather warnings or wildlife closures will cancel the tour. Check the forecast and wildlife alerts before your booking date.

What's the minimum age for this lesson?

Participants must be at least 14 years old. The operator does not recommend the lesson for travelers with spinal injuries, pregnancy or poor cardiovascular health, and expects a high level of physical fitness.
