Step-by-step itinerary

Sunrise at Moraine Lake and Lake Louise visit

  • Arrive early at Moraine Lake
  • Enjoy sunrise and turquoise waters
  • Listen to guide's stories
  • Visit Lake Louise
  • Stroll lakeshore or rent canoe
  • Have coffee at Fairmont Chateau

The experience

The tour starts in the dark. You're picked up from your Banff-area hotel at either 4:00 AM or 4:20 AM, depending on where you're staying, and driven in an air-conditioned vehicle to Moraine Lake. The timing is deliberate: you arrive in time to watch the sunrise hit the turquoise water and the Valley of the Ten Peaks, before the parking lot fills. Your guide walks you to the best viewpoints and talks through the lake's geology, its wildlife, and the stories behind the landscape. This part of the day lasts about an hour and a half.

From Moraine Lake, the drive to Lake Louise takes just a few minutes. You have the rest of the morning there, roughly three hours, to move at your own pace. Some travelers walk the lakeshore. Others rent a canoe and paddle out toward the glaciers. If you'd rather sit still, the Fairmont Chateau has coffee and a view of the snow-capped peaks across the water. There's no fixed itinerary for this part. You choose what suits the moment.

The tour runs five hours total. Bottled water is provided throughout. Your guide speaks English, Hindi, or Chinese, depending on availability. Children from age one are welcome on the tour, though the early start and the physical demands of walking to viewpoints mean it works best for families comfortable with an early wake-up and moderate activity.

Is this one for you?The early departure is what locks in the sunrise and the quiet. If you sleep past 4 AM or need a later start, a different tour time would suit you better. Families with young children can bring infants in specialized seats, but the predawn pickup and the walking mean it works best for families already used to early mornings.
