The experience

The tour runs 10 to 11 hours and covers the Icefields Parkway, the scenic spine of the Canadian Rockies. You start at Lake Louise, where the guide drops you at the lakeshore to walk the turquoise waters and photograph the Fairmont Chateau backdrop: about an hour on the ground. From there the route climbs into the high country: Peyto Lake with its vivid glacial blue, Bow Lake fed by the Bow Glacier, and Crowfoot Glacier, named for its three-toed shape. The guide points out what you're standing in front of and handles the stops so the sequence holds without anyone building it.

In summer (June to mid-October), Moraine Lake is the centerpiece: another turquoise alpine lake ringed by peaks. In winter, that stop trades for Emerald Lake in Yoho National Park and the Natural Bridge, a limestone formation carved by the Kicking Horse River over thousands of years. Johnston Canyon comes next: an easy-to-moderate trail along catwalks and bridges above the Lower Falls, with views of the limestone cliffs and the creek below. The day closes at Bow Falls, a wide, powerful cascade on the Bow River just minutes from Banff town, and Mount Norquay lookout for panoramic views back across the park.

The vehicle is air-conditioned and holds a maximum of 12 travelers, which means you're not on a coach with 40 people. Your guide speaks English or Hindi and knows the route, the timing, and where the light hits each stop. Park admission is included, as is bottled water. You choose whether to add lunch at Lake Louise Village during the stop there: the tour doesn't force a meal stop, but the option is there if you want it.
