The experience
Three hours gets you to both lakes and back. The tour starts at Lake Louise Ski Resort & Summer Gondola, where you walk the shoreline with a certified guide who points out Mt. Victoria and the surrounding mountains while explaining the local ecology and history. The turquoise water and the glacier backdrop are the draw, and the guide's knowledge fills in what the landscape itself does not say. From there it is a 20-minute drive to Moraine Lake.
At Moraine Lake, you hike the Rockpile Trail to a viewpoint overlooking the turquoise water against the Valley of the Ten Peaks: the photograph most people come for. The trail is short and the viewpoint is the destination. You are not trekking deep into the backcountry. After the viewpoint, another 20-minute drive returns you to where you started. Guaranteed entry to both lakes means you skip the parking lot lottery that catches most visitors. The operator secures your access in advance.
The group stays small (up to 15 people in one air-conditioned van), so the guide can actually talk and you can hear. A certified guide in English leads both walks and answers questions as you go. Service animals are welcome. The tour suits all fitness levels because the walking is moderate and the pace is set by the group, not by a race schedule.
