Step-by-step itinerary

Day 1 — Explore Canadian Rockies and Banff

  • Pick up from Calgary, Canmore, or Banff
  • Pass by Three Sisters and Castle Mountain
  • Pass by Cascade Mountain
  • Visit Emerald Lake
  • Visit Natural Bridge
  • Visit Lake Louise
  • Have lunch for 1 hour
  • Visit Moraine Lake (Jun to Oct 13) or Johnston Canyon (winter)
  • Pass by Vermilion Lakes
  • Spend free time in Banff Town
  • Optional Banff Gondola ride (ticket not included)
  • Drive back to starting point

Li handed me a thermos of hot tea as we climbed into the van outside my hotel in Banff—she joked that it was “to keep our noses warm.” I liked her right away. The sun wasn’t up yet, just this blue-grey light over the Three Sisters. We’d barely left town when someone spotted elk by the roadside, and Li slowed down so we could watch them for a minute—no rush, she said, “they’re locals too.”

I didn’t expect to feel so small at Emerald Lake. The air smelled sharp and cold, like pine needles and something older. There were these tiny flecks of ice on the water’s edge (it’s early October), and Li explained how the color comes from glacial rock flour—her words, but I kept thinking it looked like someone dropped a watercolor set into the lake. We wandered around Natural Bridge after that; I tried to take a photo but ended up just standing there listening to the river under all that stone. It’s louder than you’d think.

Lunch was quick—nothing fancy, just sandwiches and coffee at a little spot near Lake Louise—but honestly I barely tasted it because my mind was still stuck on those turquoise waters. At Lake Louise itself, there were crowds but also this weird hush when you got close to the shore. A few people skipped stones; I watched an older couple try to take a selfie and end up laughing instead. If you’re here in summer, Moraine Lake is open (we lucked out), and it’s only a short walk from the parking lot but feels like another world entirely. Those peaks look fake in photos but somehow realer in person.

On the way back through Banff town we had an hour to wander—I bought maple fudge I didn’t need and listened to buskers playing near the park. Some folks took the Banff Gondola up Sulphur Mountain (not included), but I just sat with my tea watching clouds move over Cascade Mountain. I still think about that view sometimes when things get loud at home.
