The experience

The day starts at Johnston Canyon, where you follow suspended catwalks above a turquoise creek to view waterfalls and canyon walls. The route then moves into Yoho National Park to Emerald Lake, where a wooden bridge crosses the water with mountain views framing the shot. You'll also stop at the Natural Bridge, where the Kicking Horse River has carved a limestone arch over centuries. Takakkaw Falls, fed by the Daly Glacier and dropping 373 meters in two main stages, comes next. The name is Cree for "it is magnificent," and the waterfall is most dramatic in summer when snowmelt peaks.

Lake Louise anchors the middle of the day with a lunch stop at one of the village restaurants. The tour ends at the Banff sign, the wooden letters at the park entrance where visitors pose for photographs against the mountain backdrop. Your guide drives an air-conditioned vehicle and speaks either English or Hindi, and the operator provides bottled water throughout the day. Admission to Moraine Lake is included if you travel between June 1 and October 14.
