The experience
You're picked up from your Banff accommodation and driven through the Canadian Rockies on a route that hits five glacier-fed lakes and a waterfall. The guide navigates the stops in sequence: the Spiral Tunnels first, an engineering oddity where the railroad crosses beneath itself twice before descending the mountain grade. Then Takakkaw Falls, a 373-metre cascade fed by glacier melt that peaks in late spring when snowmelt is heaviest. The Natural Bridge comes next, a stone arch carved by rushing water over what was once a waterfall, then Emerald Lake, ringed by mountains and named for the turquoise colour its glacial sediment creates in the water.
Lake Louise and Moraine Lake anchor the afternoon. Lake Louise sits below the Victoria Glacier with the palatial hotel visible from the shore. Moraine Lake, set in the Valley of the Ten Peaks, has the most vivid turquoise of the five and is accessible only from June through October when the road opens. Because the tour is private, there's no waiting for others to finish at each stop, and the guide can linger where you want to linger or skip what doesn't interest you. The vehicle is air-conditioned, bottled water is provided, and park passes are handled as part of the booking.
Takakkaw Falls road opens June 15 and Moraine Lake road opens sometime between late May and early June, depending on snow conditions. Both close in October. The tour is sightseeing only, not a guided history lesson, so the guide points out what's there and answers questions rather than delivering a lecture. All stops have Parks Canada information boards on-site.

Top questions
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What makes Moraine Lake's water that particular shade of turquoise?
Moraine Lake's colour comes from glacial sediment: finely ground rock flour suspended in the water. As glaciers melt, their meltwater carries this sediment downstream into the lake basin, and the way the suspended particles scatter light, combined with the reflection of the blue sky, creates that vivid turquoise hue.
How tall is Takakkaw Falls?
Takakkaw Falls has a total height of 373 metres (1,224 feet), making it the second tallest waterfall in Canada. The main drop alone is 254 metres (833 feet), and the falls are fed by meltwater from the Daly Glacier, so they're at peak volume in late spring after heavy snow melts.
Can I customize the stops on this tour if there's somewhere I'd rather spend more time?
Yes. Because it's a private tour, you can contact the operator before booking to request changes to the itinerary. The guide can adjust the route and time spent at each stop to match what interests you most.
When is Moraine Lake accessible during the year?
The road to Moraine Lake is seasonally open from June through October. It closes in winter due to heavy snowfall and avalanche risk, opening sometime between late May and early June depending on conditions, and closing again after Canadian Thanksgiving in October.
What's included in the tour price?
Private transportation in an air-conditioned vehicle, park passes for both Banff and Yoho National Parks, bottled water, and pickup from your Banff accommodation are all included. Gratuity is appreciated but not mandatory.
