Salvador Private City Tour: Afro-Brazilian Culture & Local LunchDiscover Salvador’s African heritage on a private city tour. Explore São Joaquim Market, Casa do Benin, and enjoy a homemade Bahian lunch.★ 4.71 (14)6hUS$ 180View › The first thing I noticed walking into Ana’s kitchen was the smell—something like coconut oil and garlic, but warmer, richer. She greeted us with this easy smile and handed me an apron before I could even put my bag down. There were only five of us, so it felt more like joining friends than a class. The windows were open and you could hear the street outside—kids yelling, someone selling fruit, that kind of background music you only get in Salvador.
Ana started us off with caipirinhas (she said “bottomless” and meant it—I stopped counting after my third). We chopped cassava for sticks and she showed me how to make farofa without burning it. My hands smelled like lime and cilantro for hours after. At one point I tried to pronounce “moqueca de camarão com banana-da-terra” right—Ana laughed so hard she nearly dropped her spoon. There’s something about learning these recipes in someone’s actual home that just makes everything stick; I still remember the trick she showed for getting the shrimp perfectly tender.
By the time we sat down together—rice steaming, moqueca bubbling, vinaigrette on the side—the kitchen had turned into this noisy table full of stories (and more caipirinhas). Someone played a bit of samba from their phone. The brigadeiro was sticky and sweet; I probably ate too many but nobody cared. When we left, Ana sent us off with digital recipes and a Salvador food guide—plus some candid photos where I look way too focused on chopping onions.
