The experience
What makes this hike different is the waterfall itself. Cachoeira do Saco Bravo doesn't end in a pool hidden in the forest. It flows directly into the Atlantic Ocean, creating a rare natural setting where fresh water meets salt water. You swim in a pool fed by the cascade while looking out at the open sea, something few waterfalls in Brazil offer. The trail to reach it covers 8.4 kilometers through the Juatinga Ecological Reservation, moving through intact Atlantic Forest and past the small fishing village of Ponta Negra before climbing to the waterfall.
The day starts early: you meet at the Paraty bus station at 6:30 a.m., travel to a private dock, then take a boat to Ponta Negra at 8 a.m. From there the trail begins, climbing through forest for roughly 2 hours to the waterfall. The return hike takes the same time. You're back at the dock by mid-afternoon and return to Paraty by 5 p.m., finishing around 5 p.m. An accredited guide leads the group in English, Spanish, Portuguese or French, keeping numbers small so the pace stays manageable and the experience stays intimate.
The hike is rated moderate difficulty and demands at least moderate physical fitness. The 2-hour climb is steady but not technical. Bring water, sun protection and a swimsuit. The pool at the top is the reward for the effort. The boat is included in the price, as is the guide. You arrange your own way to the bus station in Paraty.
