Mamangua Sugarloaf Peak hike from Paraty: tropical fjord views
Climb through rainforest to views that span a fjord most travelers never reach
This full-day hiking and boat tour from Paraty takes you by speedboat to Saco do Mamanguá, Brazil's only tropical fjord, where you hike Mamangua Sugarloaf Peak with a local English-speaking guide for panoramic views of the bays and rainforest-covered mountainsides. The hike takes about 1 hour 20 minutes up; after descending, you swim and have lunch at a beach restaurant on Cruzeiro Beach before returning to Paraty by boat. A minimum of 2 people per booking is required, and moderate fitness is necessary for the steep terrain.
The Experience
You start on the pier in Paraty and take a fastboat across to Cruzeiro Beach, where the hike begins. The climb up Mamangua Sugarloaf Peak is steep and takes roughly 1 hour 20 minutes; your English-speaking guide leads the way through rainforest and knows the route and the landscape. What makes this different from a standard hike is the setting—you're climbing into a tropical fjord ecosystem that exists nowhere else in Brazil, and the views from 425 meters take in the bays, the forested slopes dropping to the water, and the Juatinga Peninsula Eco-reserve spreading out below.
After you descend, there's time to swim and rest on Cruzeiro Beach. A beach kiosk serves fresh seafood if you want lunch; bring money for that, or bring your own food. The operator recommends 1.5 liters of water per person—you can buy more at the trailhead. On the return journey by speedboat to Paraty, there's a chance for a quick swim at another beach or island along the way, so the day doesn't end the moment you step off the boat.
