The Experience

The jeep leaves central Paraty and heads into the mountains on rough roads, reaching Pedra Branca Waterfall after about 25 minutes. You get roughly an hour to swim in the clear water and sit in the pools before a short walk leads to Alambique Pedra Branca, a working cachaça distillery where you watch the production process and taste several varieties of the liquor. The guide explains what you're tasting as you sample them.

After the distillery, the jeep takes you to a local restaurant where lunch is available if you want it (you pay separately). Then comes Engenho D'ouro, a second distillery with more tasting and a stop at the Caminho do Ouro marker, where the guide tells you about the Gold Trail's history. A five-minute walk brings you to Toboga Falls, a natural waterslide that lets you slide down into the pool below. The day ends at Tarzan Falls, where you spend about an hour swimming in deep pools and swinging out on a rope that hangs over the water.

The tour runs six hours total and covers terrain that is steep and uneven — the jeep handles it, but you'll feel every bump. Wear comfortable walking shoes and bring a swimsuit and towel; the guide recommends flip-flops and insect repellent. Children from age three can join, though infants must sit on an adult's lap. The meeting point is on Avenida Roberto Silveira in central Paraty; there is no hotel pickup, so you'll need to get there on your own or arrange a separate transfer.
