The experience
I woke up with that sticky feeling you get in the tropics, not quite sure if it was sweat or just the air itself. The boat ride from Manaus had already made my shirt cling to my back, but I didn’t mind: we’d just left the city behind and were gliding through a tangle of green on a canoe that looked like it had seen a thousand sunrises. Our guide, Paulo, handed me a chunk of tree bark to smell. “Medicinal,” he said. It smelled sharp and earthy, almost like ginger but wilder. He grinned when I asked if it really worked: “my grandma swears by it.” I tried not to trip over a root as we followed him deeper into the Amazon jungle.
The hike was muddy (Paulo warned us about this), and my shoes squelched every step. We didn’t see any monkeys (they’re too clever for tourists), but the birds made enough racket for ten forests. Lunch at the floating house tasted simple but good: grilled fish, rice, beans, spaghetti all together on one plate. Someone jumped in for a swim.
