The experience

You arrive in Manaus and travel by boat deep into the Amazon River to a secluded camp where a native family has invited you to stay. Your first task is practical: you'll hang hammocks with integrated mosquito nets, gather firewood, and cook your first meal alongside your hosts. People who sustain themselves entirely from their pineapple plantation and rarely leave the river. This is not a lodge. You sleep in the hammock you set up, eat what you catch and prepare, and the only schedule is the one the forest keeps.

The days follow the rhythms of the water and the animals. On day two you fish for piranha with local experts, learning to clean and cook your catch over charcoal. As the sun sets, you watch for toucans, macaws, harpy eagles and over a thousand other bird species that live in the basin. Day three is the deepest: you travel by small boat to call pink dolphins and grey dolphins using mimicked sounds (an ancient technique your guide will teach you), then spot caimans at the water's edge. When night falls, you spear-fish in the shallows and join a guided night hunt where you might encounter armadillos, capybaras, and tapirs moving through the dark. Your guide decides what the forest offers and what you'll eat.

On day four you move to the family's home, no internet or television, just their rooms and their meals. You visit the pineapple plantation in the afternoon and spend the evening with them before returning to Manaus on day five. Private transport picks you up where the boat dropped you and brings you back to the city. The whole journey (five days, four nights) runs on what the Amazon provides and what the people who live there know.
