The Experience

Helmet clamped on a bit crooked, I followed our guide—he called himself “Bim”—down into Harrison’s Cave. The air changed fast; warm sun swapped for this earthy chill that smelled like rain on old stone. Water dripped somewhere in the dark, echoing off stalactites that looked like melted candles. I kept bumping knees on the tram (too tall, always), but Bim just grinned and pointed at a rock formation shaped weirdly like a dragon. He said locals used to tell stories about spirits down here. I can see why—it’s got that hush where you almost want to whisper.

I didn’t expect to sweat so much after all that cool cave air, but the Gully Challenge Course is no joke. Harnessed up and already laughing at myself, I tried to swing across these ropes while a couple of kids zipped past me like it was nothing. The sun hit hard—Barbados heat is different when you’re climbing—but it felt good to just let go and laugh when I missed a step (the instructor gave me a thumbs up anyway). My hands were shaking by the end, but in a good way.

Lunch at the Green Monkey Pool Bar & Grill tasted better than it probably should have—maybe because I’d earned it? There was grilled fish that smelled smoky and sharp ginger in the juice. Some folks were already splashing in the pool; I just dangled my feet for a while, watching birds flit around near the aviary. Later we wandered over to see parrots bobbing their heads, and then poked around the Mount Gay History Experience (I still can’t pronounce “Mount Gay” right—Li laughed when I tried). Left with hair full of cave dust and arms sore from climbing, but honestly? Still thinking about that first breath of cave air.
