The Experience

Four and a half hours starts with the nature trail—a walk through lush vegetation on the Pride of Barbados trail where you stop for photos on the swings and at the bird aviary to see the colored birds. The pace is unhurried; this is not a sprint through a checklist. After the above-ground section, you board an electric tram that descends into Harrison's Cave itself, where the limestone caverns open up around you. The tram lets you off at a couple of points so you can step out and photograph the stalactites and stalagmites without scrambling or climbing—the tram does the work. A helmet is mandatory for the tram ride; if your hairstyle is tall or elaborate, you may need to adjust it to fit safely.

The rum tasting comes next, and it is the centerpiece. You sample three different blends from Mount Gay, the world's oldest commercial rum distillery, while a guide walks you through what makes each one distinct—the history, the craft, the story behind "The Rum That Invented Rum." This is not a quick shot; it is a proper tasting with explanation. Afterward, lunch is poolside at the Green Monkey Pool Bar & Grill: a wrap or sandwich (chicken, fish, or vegan), fries or a large salad, a cookie, and one drink from a choice of juices, beer, or soda. You can swim in the pool if you want to cool off, or lounge on the deck. Before you leave, the photo desk sells prints of any pictures the guides took during the day.

Hotel pickup is included, so you do not arrange transport to the cave. The whole experience is air-conditioned where it needs to be—the vehicle and the tram—and the guide is with you in English the entire time. If you cannot drink alcohol for medical reasons, this tour is not the right fit; the same goes if you are pregnant or have cardiovascular concerns that would make a tram ride risky.
