The experience

Five hours covers a lot of ground on Kangaroo Island. You start at the Emu Ridge Eucalyptus Distillery, where a short film walks you through how they extract eucalyptus oil and what goes into the products on display, and if you're lucky, you'll spot the kangaroos and emus that gave the place its name. From there it's on to Island Beehive to see a working hive and taste Ligurian bee honey, the kind the island is known for. The honey ice cream is worth grabbing if you have room.

Kingscote, South Australia's oldest European settlement, gets a full hour on its own. That's time to walk the beach, browse the local gift shops, grab lunch at one of the cafes, or just sit with a coffee and watch the water. As you leave town, you'll pass the silo art: Australia's largest kangaroo artwork and a glossy black cockatoo mural painted on grain silos, the kind of thing that stops you mid-conversation to reach for your phone.

The Kangaroo Island Brewery, opened in 2015, is where the tour pauses for a proper tasting of their craft beers and ciders. Then it's a final push to Pennington Bay, a wild rocky coastline where the water is clear and the light hits the stone in ways that make every photo look better than it should.
