  • Free time in town before ferry

We rolled out of Adelaide before the city even woke up, our little group rubbing sleep from our eyes as the van hummed toward Cape Jervis. Our guide, Chris, had this easy way of pointing out things — “Look left, that’s where the dolphins sometimes show off” — and sure enough, someone spotted a fin slicing through the ferry wake. I didn’t expect how salty and clean the air would feel out here. First stop on Kangaroo Island: Pennington Bay. The wind whipped my hair everywhere and I just stood there for a second, watching waves crash while Chris told us about local fishermen who still head out at dawn. It felt like we were seeing the island wake up too.

Lunch was this spread of cheeses and honey that tasted almost floral — apparently from bees that only live on Kangaroo Island? I tried to sound like I knew what I was talking about but honestly just nodded along with the beekeeper’s thick accent. Later at Stokes Bay, we squeezed through this cave-like gap in rocks (I banged my elbow) and suddenly there was this perfect beach, soft sand underfoot and barely anyone else around. Some people swam; I just lay back listening to magpies somewhere behind me.

That night at camp — bell tents in Flinders Chase Discovery Park — we cooked up a proper Aussie BBQ. Someone burned their sausage (not me) and Chris told stories about growing up here. The sky was so clear you could see every star; I think I lost count after twenty constellations. In the morning we beat the big buses to Remarkable Rocks. It’s hard to explain how weirdly beautiful those shapes look with no one else around except maybe a sleepy wallaby in the grass nearby.

Seal Bay Conservation Park was quieter than I’d pictured — just us walking with a ranger who pointed out sea lion pups snoozing in the sand. The smell was…well, let’s say memorable! At Little Sahara some people tried sandboarding (I chickened out after seeing someone wipe out), but even just walking those dunes felt otherworldly. On the way back to Adelaide everyone was quiet, tired but kind of glowing — you know that feeling when you’ve been outside all day? Yeah. I still think about that view over Admirals Arch when the waves crashed so loud you could feel it in your chest.
