The Experience

You start with hotel pickup from whichever of the three towns you choose—Kingscote, American River or Penneshaw—and travel by air-conditioned coach with a local guide who provides commentary on the drive. The coach heads to Flinders Chase National Park, where the day splits between coastal landmarks and the wildlife park. At Seal Bay Conservation Park, a Parks Interpretive Officer takes you down onto the beach itself to watch Australian sea lions swimming in the surf or resting in the sand; this is the closest access most visitors get to them in their natural habitat.

From there you walk the boardwalk around the cliff face to Admirals Arch, a natural rock formation carved by sea erosion that now serves as a nursery for long-nosed fur seals—you watch the colony move about their day without disturbing them. Nearby stands the Cape du Couedic Lighthouse, and then you reach Remarkable Rocks, the rugged granite formations that dominate the southern coastline and offer the kind of photographic vantage points the island is known for. Lunch (two courses) is included partway through the day.

The final stop is Kangaroo Island Wildlife Park, where you feed kangaroos under supervision and get close to the island's koalas while a keeper talks through their behavior and habitat. The coach returns you to Penneshaw by 6:45pm, where you're transferred back to your hotel. The whole day runs eight hours from pickup to drop-off.
