Step-by-step itinerary

Wildlife and beach exploration on Kangaroo Island

  • Travel to Duck Lagoon
  • Observe parrots and koalas at Duck Lagoon
  • Visit Seal Bay Conservation Park
  • Admire sea lions on the beach
  • Stop at Emu Bay beach for swimming break
  • Visit Stokes Bay to see kangaroos and wallabies
  • Spot koalas near Stokes Bay
  • Return to hotel or airport/ferry port

The experience

The tour runs eight hours and moves through the island in a 4WD, which means you reach places a standard coach cannot. You start at Duck Lagoon, where Crimson Rosellas and Rainbow Lorikeets gather on the shores of a freshwater lagoon formed by the Cygnet River. Koalas often rest in the eucalyptus trees there. From there you head to Seal Bay, where the guide takes you down to the beach itself (just a few meters from sea lions resting on the sand), so you can watch them without binoculars or distance.

Stokes Bay comes at the end of the day, in the evening light, when kangaroos and wallabies emerge to graze. The bay is also known for a tunnel carved through the rocks that leads to the beach beyond it, and you'll likely spot more koalas nearby. If you're lucky, you might see an echidna. Emu Bay beach is another stop where dolphins sometimes swim close to shore, and in summer you can swim there if conditions allow.

Lunch is a gourmet BBQ included in the tour, and you'll have morning or afternoon tea as well. The guide is experienced in reading the island's wildlife patterns, so the timing and the stops shift slightly depending on where animals are active that day. Hotel pickup and drop-off are included from selected hotels, and the operator can arrange pickups from the ferry port, airport or other arrival points depending on which option you choose.

Is this one for you?Groups stay under eight passengers, so you travel in a small 4WD rather than a coach, which lets the guide stop where animals are active and take you closer to wildlife than larger tours can reach. If you're arriving by ferry or plane, choose the pickup option that matches your port or airport so the tour timing works with your arrival.
