The Experience
The day starts with hotel pickup and a drive to Seal Bay Conservation Park, where you walk a boardwalk just meters from sea lions sleeping on the sand. From there the 4WD heads into Flinders Chase National Park to hunt for koalas in their natural habitat—the guide's experience is what makes the difference between spotting them and missing them entirely. The park's two signature stops are Admirals Arch, a natural rock formation shaped by thousands of years of sea erosion where fur seals often rest among the rocks, and Remarkable Rocks, a cluster of granite boulders perched above the ocean that have been carved by wind and spray over 500 million years.
Midday brings a gourmet BBQ lunch with Kangaroo Island wines included in the package, eaten somewhere on the island. After lunch the tour continues through the park, then finishes at Vivonne Bay—a 600-meter beach on the north coast rated as one of Australia's best in a survey of 10,000 beaches. You'll have coffee and watch the sunset there before the drive back to your hotel. The whole day runs about eight hours, and the air-conditioned 4WD means you're not walking the entire time, though you should be comfortable with a moderate level of physical fitness for the boardwalks and park paths.
The tour does not work for cruise ship passengers because it finishes after the last tender departs. In summer (December to February), if outdoor BBQ isn't possible, lunch moves to a restaurant instead. Bring appropriate clothing for all weather, and let the operator know any dietary needs when you book.
