The experience

Seven to eight hours on Kangaroo Island means a drive of nearly two hours from Penneshaw into Flinders Chase National Park, where you spend roughly 1.5 to 2 hours exploring the two signature natural formations the island is known for. Remarkable Rocks comes first: a cluster of massive granite boulders you walk around on a marked path, with views across the southern coast. After that, you descend about 150 metres down a footpath and a few flights of stairs to Admirals Arch, a natural sandstone arch where Australian fur seals swim and play in the water below.

The route then heads to Seal Bay Conservation Park if time allows, where you follow a boardwalk down to a viewing platform to watch sea lions in their natural habitat. A light lunch is included somewhere along the day, and you travel in an air-conditioned vehicle with a live guide who speaks English. The tour is built around the cruise ship schedule. You depart between 8:30 and 9:00 am and return between 4:00 and 4:30 pm, timed so you're back before the tenders leave.

This excursion is designed for cruise ship passengers arriving at Penneshaw only. It does not work for guests coming on the Sealink Ferry. The operator is family-owned and prices the same itinerary cheaper than what the ship sells onboard. Moderate fitness is needed for the walking and stairs, and at booking you must declare any dietary requirements so the lunch can be arranged.
