The experience

You leave Adelaide early to catch the ferry at Cape Jervis, then cross to Penneshaw in 45 minutes. Your guide meets you on arrival and takes the group, no more than 20 people, through the first day's stops: the Kangaroo Island Sculpture Trail, a local honey farm, Emu Ridge Eucalyptus Distillery, and Dudley Wines, where you sprawl on the lawn overlooking the ocean. By late afternoon you reach the eco-campsite called Happiness, set on private access to Antechamber Bay beach. Tonight you sleep in a swag under the stars.

Day two is the wildlife core. After breakfast, a National Parks ranger leads a 45-minute guided walk at Seal Bay, where around 800 endangered sea lions live. You walk the boardwalk through coastal dunes and spot them sunbathing, sometimes right across the path. Then you drive west into Flinders Chase National Park to walk the boardwalk at Admirals Arch (where New Zealand fur seals lounge on the rocks below), and stand in front of Remarkable Rocks, 500-million-year-old formations that rise from the ocean. You return to camp for dinner and another night under the stars.

The final morning starts with a bush walk near camp before you pack up. You stop at Cape Willoughby lighthouse, perched above dramatic cliffs, then tackle the 500 steps up Prospect Hill for panoramic views across the island. If time allows, you stop in Kingscote for a swim, picnic or cold drink before heading back to Penneshaw to catch the ferry home, arriving in Adelaide around 9:00 pm. The tour adapts to weather and seasonal wildlife. April, May and September offer fewer crowds and a wilder side of the island.

Is this one for you?The 3-day length fits a long weekend or a break from city time without committing to a week on the island. Small-group hiking and camping mean you're moving each day and sleeping outdoors, so it suits someone who wants to hike coastal trails and see wildlife up close rather than stay in one base and take day trips.

Flinders Chase is home to New Zealand fur seals at Admirals Arch, and the island itself hosts koalas, though sightings depend on the day and season. The tour also offers an optional two-hour marine snorkelling safari to swim with wild bottlenose dolphins or long-nosed seals.

Where do I sleep on this 3-day tour?

You camp in a swag (a canvas sleeping bag on a stretcher) for two nights at Happiness, an eco-campsite on a private bushland property with beach access to Antechamber Bay. The site has facilities and you sleep under open sky. The itinerary adapts to weather while all advertised inclusions remain the same.
