The experience
Eight hours in a 4WD takes you through the Dudley Peninsula's main stops: Nepean Bay for a beach walk past red clay cliffs, American River where Glossy Black Cockatoos feed in the trees, and Pennington Bay's surfer-favored waves. The guide stops at Prospect Hill so you can climb to views of both the North and South Shore at once: the island narrows to just 900 meters coast-to-coast here. Transport, morning or afternoon tea, and a gourmet picnic are included. If you want to visit a winery or two along the way, the guide can arrange stops.
The tour's real draw is the evening wildlife viewing near Cape Willoughby, the island's easternmost point. After the guide takes you inside the lighthouse to see across to the Fleurieu Peninsula on the mainland, kangaroos, koalas, wallabies, and pelicans start appearing as the light fades. If you're lucky, you'll spot an echidna. The 4WD then returns you to your hotel or the airport and ferry terminal, meaning the tour finishes later than the last cruise ship tender, so it's not an option if you're arriving by ship.
The guide speaks English or Italian and knows where to find wildlife in their natural habitat. You'll need at least a moderate level of fitness for the walking involved, and the tour runs in all weather, so dress for conditions. Each traveler can bring one small piece of luggage. Let the operator know ahead of time if you have excess bags to confirm they'll fit.

Is this one for you?Book this tour if you want to see kangaroos and koalas in their natural habitat during the evening hours when they're most active, and you have a full day to spend on the island. The eight-hour commitment and late return time mean it doesn't fit cruise ship schedules, but it's ideal for independent travelers staying overnight on Kangaroo Island.
Top questions
What languages is the tour guided in?
Live guide in English and Italian.
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Child (4 to 14 years); Infant (1 to 3 years).
What animals will I actually see on this Kangaroo Island tour?
Kangaroos, koalas, wallabies, and pelicans are regularly spotted, especially in the evening near Cape Willoughby. Glossy Black Cockatoos can be seen feeding in the trees around American River, and if conditions align, you may see an echidna.
Does the tour include food, or do I need to bring my own lunch?
A gourmet picnic is included in the full-day tour, along with morning or afternoon tea. Let the operator know about any dietary requirements when you book.
Can I visit a winery during the tour?
Yes, the guide can arrange stops at local wineries if you're interested in tasting wines from the island. These are optional stops built into the day.
What's the difference between the five departure options?
The tour picks you up from and returns you to your choice of Kangaroo Island location: the airport, American River, Penneshaw, Kingscote, or the ferry terminal. All options run the same eight-hour route and include the same stops and wildlife viewing.
Is this tour suitable if I'm arriving on a cruise ship?
No, the tour finishes too late to meet the last ship tender back to your vessel, so it's not recommended for cruise passengers. The eight-hour itinerary and evening wildlife viewing near the lighthouse mean return times conflict with ship schedules.
