The Experience

I still remember the first thing that hit me — that sharp, cold smell when we stepped out near Lapataia Bay. It’s not just sea air, it’s like wet moss and woodsmoke together. Our guide, Lucía, grinned and said something about “el fin del mundo,” which I’d heard before but it sounded different here. The wind was loud enough to make us all laugh at how our hats kept trying to fly away. There’s this battered sign marking the end of the Pan-American Highway — Alaska to here — and I touched it without really knowing why. Maybe just to say I did.

The drive from Ushuaia wasn’t long, maybe half an hour? But you see the city drop away fast, replaced by these forests that look almost black against the snow in winter. We stopped at Lake Roca (or Acigami — Lucía used both names), and she pointed out where Argentina meets Chile right across the water. Someone asked if you could swim there; she just shook her head and laughed. I tried saying “Lapataia” properly and probably butchered it — got a smile anyway. The quiet was strange, almost heavy, except for crows or whatever those birds were.

If you want, you can ride this old train called the End of the World Train — they rebuilt it from what prisoners used back when Ushuaia was mostly a penal colony. It’s not long but feels kind of surreal with all that steam and those narrow tracks winding through snowy lenga trees. Some folks skipped it and just walked with Lucía instead; either way you get stories about prisoners chopping wood or sending postcards from that tiny post office by Bahia Ensenada Zaratiegui (it was closed for us but she showed us where people stamp their passports). My fingers went numb taking photos but honestly didn’t care.

There’s something about Tierra del Fuego — maybe because it’s so far south or maybe because everyone seems quietly proud to be from here. It isn’t showy or dramatic every second; more like a slow burn that sticks with you after you leave. On the way back to town I kept thinking about that battered sign at Lapataia Bay, how far we’d come just to stand there in the wind for a minute or two.
