The Experience

The hike starts with a pickup from your accommodation and moves through the park's less-traveled trails in a group kept small enough that the guide can stop and explain what you're standing in front of. You'll walk the coast at Lake Roca—also called Acigami Glacier Lake—where you can see the meridian line that marks the border with Chile running across the water. The guide points out how the landscape shifts as you move: Andes peaks, sub-Antarctic forest, peatlands, and the Beagle Channel all visible from a single vantage point. Coffee and tea are provided partway through.

Lapataia Bay is where the Pan American Route ends, the final kilometer of the road that runs from Alaska to this southern tip. The bay combines forest, mountain and sea in one view. Ensenada Zaratiegui sits nearby, and if the End of the World Mail station is open, you can stamp a passport or send a postcard from there—a detail the guide will mention. The walk is designed as an interpretive experience: the guide shares stories about the geography, ecology and human history of the region, not just the names of things. Winter closures may alter which trails are available depending on snow.

An air-conditioned vehicle handles the transport between stops, and you're dropped back at your accommodation when the 5.5-hour tour ends. The guide speaks English, Spanish or Portuguese depending on the group. This is not a strenuous scramble—it's a walking tour with stops—but it does involve hiking on uneven terrain, so the operator notes it's not suitable for travelers with spinal injuries or poor cardiovascular health.
