The experience
Theth National Park sits at the end of a steep mountain road, reachable only by shared local transport from Tirana or Shkodra in the early morning. The drive takes you through wild fields and past Shkodra Lake toward the Albanian Alps, climbing to 1,700 meters at Qafa e Thores. A viewpoint locals say offers the best photograph of the range. Once in Theth village, you hike to the Blue Eye, a spring-fed pool carved by snowmelt from the high peaks, about 3 hours one way on a moderate trail that gains 700 meters over 18 kilometers. The village itself holds the Old Church and the Lock-in Tower, a centuries-old symbol of Theth's isolated past.
Day two is the physical centerpiece: a 6- to 8-hour trek from Theth to Valbona Valley across the Valbona Pass, climbing 1,050 meters through remote terrain. The pass itself is the payoff. A ridge where you can see both sides of the valleys and the jagged peaks of the Accursed Mountains. You carry your own pack for this crossing, so the operator recommends traveling light. Luggage transport from Theth to Valbona is available for an extra fee if arranged in advance. Valbona Valley, your second night's stop, is a small village ringed by high mountains and accessible only on foot or by the route you just walked.
The final day trades hiking for water. A boat carries you down Komani Lake through a landscape of waterfalls, rural villages and wild forest, then a bumpy local transport ride over rough roads back to Shkodra or Tirana. You're dropped at the bus station. From there, taxis and buses connect to your hotel. The operator provides all transport between Tirana and the trailhead, two nights in traditional guesthouses with basic bathrooms, boat passage and a support team reachable before, during and after the trek. Meals, drinks and the final transfer to your hotel are on you.

Top questions
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. No refund if you cancel.
How difficult is the hike from Theth to Valbona on day two?
The Valbona Pass trek is a 6- to 8-hour climb of 1,050 meters over 14 kilometers on a one-way trail rated moderate in technical difficulty. It crosses remote terrain and requires you to carry your own belongings, so moderate fitness and some hiking experience are needed. The operator does not recommend it for travelers with poor cardiovascular health.
What is the Blue Eye and how long does it take to reach it?
The Blue Eye is a spring-fed pool formed by erosion from melting snow in the Albanian Alps, located a 3-hour hike from Theth village. The round-trip distance is 18 kilometers with 700 meters of elevation gain on a moderate loop trail. If you book local transport to the village of Nderlysaj first, the hike shortens to about 1 hour each way for a small additional fee.
What kind of accommodation do you stay in?
You sleep two nights in traditional guesthouses or homestays with basic bathroom amenities in Theth and Valbona. Rooms typically hold two to five travelers, and mixed-gender groups may share unless you book a private room for an extra charge of 45 euros per night, subject to availability.
Do you need hiking experience to do this tour?
Yes, the operator requires at least moderate physical fitness and some hiking experience. The second day's trek across the Valbona Pass is the most demanding, climbing over 1,000 meters in remote mountain terrain, and you carry your own pack for the full distance.
What happens on the boat ride across Komani Lake?
The boat carries you from Fierza Dam down Komani Lake on day three, passing waterfalls, rural villages and wild forest before reaching the Komani dam. From there, local transport takes you over bumpy roads to Shkodra or Tirana bus station, where you arrange your own taxi or bus to your hotel.
What is included and what do you need to pay for separately?
Included are shared transport from Tirana or Shkodra to Theth on day one, two nights in a guesthouse, the boat ticket across Komani Lake, return transport to the bus station, and support from the Choose Balkans team. Meals, drinks, snacks, any local transport not listed (such as the optional ride from Theth village to shorten the Blue Eye hike), private rooms, luggage transport, and your transfer from the hotel to the meeting point on day one are not included.
