The experience
The trip starts before dawn: pickup from your Tirana hotel at 5:00 am, then a drive to Berisha on the shores of Koman Lake. You'll spend the first day paddling through the lake's steep canyons: the water runs through terrain so remote that the only accommodation is a local family's guesthouse, the first to open their doors to visitors. Kayaking here means you're moving through the landscape under your own power, watching the canyon walls rise as you go.
Day two takes you from Berisha to Valbona Valley. After a 45-minute drive through Bajram Curri, you'll hike in Kukaj, a remote area where you can see how people still live in the valley's traditional way. You sleep in wooden cabins. Day three is the longest: a full-day hike from Valbona to Theth along the ancient path locals walked when traveling between villages took two days on foot. The route passes through the oldest part of the valley, where stone towers more than a century old still stand, and opens onto views of rocky terrain mixed with quiet forest. Lunch is a break at a traditional café. Theth itself holds the "Lock in Tower," a symbol of the region's feudal past and the blood feuds that once made the mountains a refuge.
The final day includes a 45-minute walk to Gurnas Waterfall from Theth's center, then a three-hour drive to Shkoder, where you'll visit the Catholic Cathedral before returning to Tirana. Your guide speaks English throughout, and the tour covers national park fees, lifejackets and safety gear, three nights in shared rooms, and all transport from your hotel.

Is this one for you?Book this tour if you have at least moderate fitness for both paddling and hiking and want to combine water-based exploration with mountain trekking in a single trip. The four-day length lets you move slowly through the landscape (paddling one day, hiking the next) rather than rushing between stops, and staying in local guesthouses and mountain cabins means you're sleeping where the people of the region actually live.

Top questions
What's the kayaking like on Koman Lake?
Koman Lake kayaking takes you through steep limestone canyons in a remote area. You paddle at your own pace, exploring the water while the canyon walls rise around you. The lake is calm enough for paddlers with moderate fitness, and lifejackets and safety gear are provided.
How difficult is the hike from Valbona to Theth?
The Valbona-to-Theth hike is the longest day of the tour and follows an ancient footpath through mountain terrain. You'll walk through forests and past 100-year-old stone towers, with a lunch break at a traditional café. The route is steep in sections and requires at least moderate fitness.
Where do I sleep, and what are the accommodations like?
You stay three nights in shared rooms: the first with a local family in Berisha, the second in wooden cabins at Valbona, and the third in Theth. These are basic mountain guesthouses. Private rooms are available for an extra 30 euros per night.
