The experience

The tour leaves Tirana at 5:00 am on day one and reaches Koman Lake by mid-morning. A 2.5-hour ferry crossing takes you through the water (the main transport route locals have used since the dam opened in 1985) before a local-style ride brings you to the Valbona Valley guesthouse. After lunch and a short rest, a warm-up hike around Kukaj shows how people live in this remote area, where stone houses stand on slopes that see few outsiders.

Day two is the trek's centerpiece: a 20-km hike from Valbona to Theth following paths villagers have walked for generations. The route climbs through 100-year-old stone settlements and lush forests, with stops at traditional cafés along the way. After 7 to 8 hours of walking, you arrive in Theth, a village built around the Lock-In Tower: a structure tied to the blood feuds that shaped Albanian mountain life. Day three adds the Gurnasi Waterfall, a 45-minute walk from the village, before you travel to Shkoder for the night and a short city tour.

The final day moves to water. You paddle a stand-up board through the Skadar Lake wetlands, a protected bird area where Dalmatian Pelicans and Whiskered Terns nest among lily flowers. The paddle includes a coffee break at a lakeside restaurant, a traditional pastry lunch on the shore, and a stop at the 13th-century Church of Shirq before the tour ends around 5:00 pm in Obot village. Transport back to Tirana follows, or you can arrange a private continuation into Montenegro.

Is this one for you? This tour works best for small groups or individuals comfortable with a full day of hiking and multiple days away from the city. The fixed itinerary and shared transport mean you travel with other visitors, and the 20-km trek on day two requires steady walking over 7 to 8 hours. Top questions

What is the Lock-In Tower in Theth and why does it matter to this tour?

The Lock-In Tower is the symbol of Theth village and stands at the center of its history. It is tied to the blood feuds that once shaped life in the Albanian mountains and connects to the tradition of "Sworn Virgins": a practice documented in Ismail Kadare's novel "Broken April." The guide explains this history during the visit on day three.

How long is the hike from Valbona to Theth and what will I see along the way?

The trek is 20 km and takes 7 to 8 hours, following an ancient path locals have used for years. You walk through the oldest part of the villages, passing stone houses more than 100 years old, then climb through lush green forests and long rocky valleys. Lunch stops at traditional cafés along the route let you rest and refuel.

What kind of birds and wildlife might I see while paddling Skadar Lake?

Skadar Lake is a protected wetland where Dalmatian Pelicans and Whiskered Terns nest among lily flowers. The lake is designated as a Ramsar site and Important Bird Area, making it a prime spot for birdwatching during the stand-up paddle portion on day four.

What happens on the ferry ride across Koman Lake?

The ferry crossing lasts 2.5 hours and is the main way locals travel across Koman Lake, which has been the country's second-largest electricity source since 1985. The journey is described as a sailing through the water before you reach the station at Fierza and transfer to the Valbona Valley.

Where do I stay each night, and what meals are included?

You stay in guesthouses in Valbona on night one and Theth on night two, then a hotel in Shkoder on night three. Lunch and dinner are included throughout the tour, with meals served at the guesthouses and traditional cafés along the hiking route. On day four, a traditional pastry lunch is served on the shore of Skadar Lake.
