The Experience

"The water here is so clear you'll see the fish before you hit the surface," our guide said as we pulled away from the dock at 8am. He wasn't exaggerating. The speedboat cuts through the An Thoi Archipelago fast enough that you're not wasting hours in transit — you're actually on the islands, in the water, by mid-morning. Hotel pickup starts the day, so there's no scrambling for a taxi or figuring out where the harbor is. You just get in the boat.

The first real stop is Gam Ghi Island, where the snorkeling happens. The coral reefs here are still vibrant — schools of small fish, some bigger ones hanging in the deeper channels, and the water so transparent you can see the sand fifteen feet down. It's not a crowded spot either, at least not when you're there early. After that, May Rut Island is where you slow down. Some people keep snorkeling; others just float in the turquoise shallows or walk onto the white sand and sit. There's no schedule pressure — the boat waits. Then comes lunch at a seaside restaurant on the island itself, fresh local dishes, nothing fancy but real.

Ocean World (also called Hon Dua or Hon Roi) is a stop where you can add things on your own dime — sea walking, jet skis, flyboarding — but you don't have to.
