The Experience

I hopped onto the back of the scooter just outside my hotel in Hoi An—helmet a little crooked, breeze already sticky on my arms. Our guide, Minh, grinned and said something about “country roads better than city,” which I only half understood but totally agreed with after five minutes. We zipped past rice paddies where water buffalos chewed lazily and kids waved at us like we were celebrities. The green was so bright it almost hurt my eyes; I kept thinking how different it felt from the old town’s lantern-lit streets.

First stop was Tra Que Vegetable Village. Minh introduced us to a farmer named Lan who showed me how to pat down rows of herbs—my hands got muddy and smelled like basil for hours after. She laughed when I tried to say “rau thơm” (I probably mangled it). There was this earthy scent everywhere, mixed with something sweet from the nearby river.
