The Experience

I didn’t expect to trust someone else’s driving so quickly, but there I was—helmet slightly askew, clinging to the back of Linh’s motorbike as we zipped through Hoi An’s side streets. The air smelled like grilled pork and something sweet I couldn’t place. Linh laughed when I tried to say “banh mi” properly—she said my accent sounded like her little nephew’s. First stop was this bread shop that looked like nothing special from the outside, but the queue snaked out into the street. That first bite—warm bread, crunchy outside, spicy-sour pickles—I still think about it.

We’d slow down sometimes so Linh could point out some old yellow houses or a lantern shop glowing even though it was barely dusk. She waved at an old man selling tiny pancakes on the corner; apparently he’s been there forever. There was a moment when we were stopped at a red light and I realized how much noise there is here—motorbikes buzzing past, someone yelling for their kid, music from somewhere behind a wall.
