The Experience
The rice fields open up as soon as you leave the old town. Your guide meets you at your hotel in Hoi An and you cycle out past the tourist zone into Tra Que vegetable village, where the gardeners are already at work in the morning light — raking soil, spreading seaweed fertilizer, watering rows of herbs that end up in the restaurants you walked past yesterday. You stop and actually do some of it yourself: pick vegetables, feel the earth, understand why the same families have worked this land for decades. It's not a performance. People are there because it's their job.
From there you cross into Kim Bong carpentry village, where wooden boats and furniture sit half-finished in open-air workshops. The carpenters show you how they shape wood by hand, and you try it — the tool feels heavier than you'd expect. Then you're in Tra Nhieu fishing village watching the boats, and somewhere in between all this you stop at a local restaurant for a cold drink made with lemon basil seeds, the kind of thing you won't find in a café back in town. The bike tour keeps the pace slow enough that you're not sweating through your shirt, but you're moving enough to feel like you've actually gone somewhere, not just been driven to a photo spot.
The mat weaving happens at one of the family workshops — you sit with someone who's been doing this since childhood and try to copy their hands. Your rows won't be straight. That's the point. You get to take a mat home if you want, and the whole thing costs less than a dinner in Hoi An. By the time you're back at your hotel, you've met actual people doing actual work, not a staged version of it. The guide speaks English, carries water, and knows which families to stop at because he knows them.

It's a half-day experience. You're picked up at your hotel and returned by early afternoon.
Do I need to be an experienced cyclist?
No. The terrain is flat, the pace is slow, and you stop frequently. Moderate fitness is recommended, but it's not a sports ride.
What if I'm vegetarian?
You can request vegetarian meals when you book. The guide will know in advance.
Is the mat weaving difficult?
No. A local weaver teaches you the basics. Your mat won't look perfect, but that's normal — you're learning, not producing.
What's included in the price?
Hotel pickup, English-speaking guide, entry to all three villages, a local lemon basil seed drink, and all the activities (gardening, carving, weaving). Lunch is not included, but you can eat at local restaurants in the villages.
Can I buy the mat I make?
Yes. You can take it home if you want to keep it.
Is it safe to bike in rural Vietnam?
Yes. The roads are quiet, traffic is light, and your guide knows the route well. Helmets are recommended.
What should I bring?
Comfortable clothes, closed-toe shoes, sunscreen, and a hat. The guide provides water.
