The Experience

The rice fields open up as soon as you leave the old town. Your guide meets you at your hotel in Hoi An and you cycle out past the tourist zone into Tra Que vegetable village, where the gardeners are already at work in the morning light — raking soil, spreading seaweed fertilizer, watering rows of herbs that end up in the restaurants you walked past yesterday. You stop and actually do some of it yourself: pick vegetables, feel the earth, understand why the same families have worked this land for decades. It's not a performance. From there you cross into Kim Bong carpentry village, where wooden boats and furniture sit half-finished in open-air workshops. The carpenters show you how they shape wood by hand, and you try it — the tool feels heavier than you'd expect. Then you're in Tra Nhieu fishing village watching the boats, and somewhere in between all this you stop at a local restaurant for a cold drink made with lemon basil seeds, the kind of thing you won't find in a café back in town.
