The Experience

The first thing I remember is the sound of the stone mill — this low, rhythmic grinding as we stood in a sunlit kitchen on Cam Kim island. Our guide (Minh) had just introduced us to Mr. Thanh and his wife, who’ve been making rice paper longer than I’ve been alive. I tried turning the old stone wheel myself; it’s heavier than it looks. The smell of fresh rice flour mixed with something sweet in the air — maybe the neighbor was cooking breakfast too? Minh laughed when my rice sheet came out all lopsided but said it was “artistic.” I’ll take that.

We biked past fields where water buffaloes looked like they’d seen every tourist trick already. There’s this moment where the path narrows and you’re suddenly surrounded by green — palms, rice paddies, little flashes of blue from laundry strung between houses. At one stop, an incense maker showed us how to roll sticks by hand. The scent was sharp and earthy; I still catch it in my clothes sometimes. He told me incense is for both luck and memory here. That stuck with me more than I expected.

I didn’t expect to get so into weaving mats at Tra Nhieu village. The couple there (she wore a bright pink scarf) showed us how to dye reeds and work them into patterns — my fingers fumbled at first, but she just grinned and kept helping. We stopped for coffee later; strong, sweet, almost chocolatey. There was this breeze coming off the river that made me want to just sit forever. Last bit: Kim Bong Carpentry Village is loud with hammering and laughter — seashells everywhere, catching sunlight on carved chairs. We took the ferry back across the Hoai river, wind in our faces and boats sliding past in silence except for someone’s radio playing old pop songs in Vietnamese.
