The Experience

The Hai Van Pass is the highest mountain pass in Vietnam, rising 500 meters and stretching 21 kilometers between Hue and Da Nang with winding curves that made it famous on the Top Gear Vietnam Special. You spend roughly two hours on the pass itself, stopping every 5–10 minutes at viewpoints and photo spots, with time to rest over coffee while the mountains and sea spread below. At the top sits Hai Van Quan, a fort built in 1826, surrounded by old French and American bunkers — the views from here frame the entire coastal range.

The route threads through quieter stops that break up the riding: Lap An Lagoon near Lang Co Beach, where traditional fishermen work nets in calm water and local oyster farming happens in plain sight; Suoi Mo Waterfall, a natural pool in the mountains where you can swim in fresh water surrounded by forest and rock; and Lang Co Beach itself, a long stretch of golden sand between mountains and lagoon, where lunch arrives freshly prepared with vegetarian and pescatarian options.
