Cook five authentic Vietnamese dishes, from the market to the plate.

A three-hour Vietnamese cooking class in Da Nang where you shop at a local market with your instructor, then return to the kitchen to make five dishes from scratch—phở, bun cha, banana flower salad, spring rolls and salted coffee—under the guidance of a Vietnamese chef. The class includes all equipment, your meals, a certificate and a cookbook. Children from age 5 are welcome; the guide teaches in English or Chinese.

The Experience

The class starts at 85 Pham Quang Anh in the An Hai district. You arrive ten minutes early, then head to the local market with your cooking instructor to handpick the ingredients you'll use. This is not a quick stop—you learn the local ways of life as you shop, seeing how Vietnamese cooks select produce, meat and herbs for the dishes you're about to make.

Back in the kitchen, a Vietnamese chef walks you through making five dishes: phở (the national noodle soup), bun cha (grilled meatballs), banana flower salad, nem cuon (fried spring rolls) and salted coffee or cacao. You cook from scratch under instruction, and between the cooking, the chef shares the histories and stories behind each dish—the traditions that shaped them and the regions they come from. The class weaves in a touch of Vietnamese language as you work.

When the cooking is done, you sit down and eat what you made. You leave with a certificate, a cookbook to take home, and the muscle memory of how to make these five dishes again.

Is this one for you?The guide teaches in English or Chinese, so pick the language that fits you when you book. The three-hour format—market first, then cooking—works well if you want to understand where ingredients come from before you cook with them, and if you have a morning or afternoon free rather than just an hour.
