The town's streets reflect centuries of Chinese, Japanese, Indian and European influence, layered into the architecture and street life. You walk the Japanese Covered Bridge, completed in 1593 and distinguished by its arched design and decorated roof, then enter the Tan Ky Old House to see how merchants lived and worked within these walls. The Fujian Assembly Hall, built around 1690 as a gathering place for Chinese traders, now functions as a temple dedicated to Thien Hau, the goddess of the sea.
