The experience

“If you’re afraid of heights, just look straight ahead, not down!” That’s what our guide Minh said as we stepped into the cable car at Ba Na Hills. I laughed because honestly, my knees were already a bit wobbly. The air smelled faintly of wet leaves and something sweet, maybe flowers from below? We’d left our hotel in Da Nang not even an hour before, but it felt like another world up here, clouds drifting right past the windows. Minh pointed out tiny dots of people on the Golden Bridge far below and told us about how locals come here to escape the summer heat. I didn’t expect to feel so small, or so calm.

The Golden Hands Bridge was busier than I thought it would be, but there was this odd hush between groups. Just people staring out at all that green. Minh explained that each of the flower gardens nearby tells a different story about love (I only caught half of them because I got distracted by a kid chasing bubbles). We wandered through the French wine cellar too (cool stone walls, that musty grape smell), and tried to pronounce some Vietnamese names for things. Minh laughed when I tried “Tinh Tam Garden.” Probably butchered it.

Lunch was a buffet (included in our tour), which meant I could try everything without feeling judged. Afterward, we rode up again toward Ba Na Peak. The second cable car is even steeper. The wind picked up and for a second I thought we’d float away. At the top, there’s this mix of old European buildings and temples. It’s a little surreal but also kind of charming in its own way. The view from Linh Tu temple made me stop talking for once. You can see all the way back toward Da Nang if the clouds break just right.

On the drive back, Minh insisted we stop at Dragon Bridge for photos (“You can’t skip it!”). It glowed gold even though it was still daylight. Then Love Lock Bridge: a bunch of couples taking selfies and hanging locks. I’m not much for romantic gestures but seeing everyone smiling there was oddly sweet. We got dropped off at our hotel just as dusk hit. My legs were tired but my head felt light from all that sky.
