The Experience

Hands wrapped around a warm cup of tea, I watched our guide—Minh—wave us over to the van outside our Cao Bang guesthouse. He grinned like he’d been waiting all week for this. The city was still waking up; you could smell rice porridge drifting from open windows as we rolled out, the air sharp and a bit damp. I didn’t expect the drive to be so hypnotic—mist curling around the mountains, water buffalo ambling along the road. We stopped at Ma Phuc Pass, and honestly, I just stood there squinting into the green folds, trying to take it in. Minh pointed out knife-makers in Phuc Sen village; their hammers made this low ringing sound that stuck with me.

By late morning we were looking down at Ban Gioc Waterfall from Truc Lam Pagoda’s viewpoint—Minh kept nudging us to move along but I couldn’t stop staring. The waterfall is right on the Vietnam–China border, which feels wild when you see it up close from the boat (the spray got my camera lens, so yeah… bring a cloth). Lunch was at a little spot near the river where they served sour soup and something with wild herbs—I tried asking what it was but only caught “rau rừng.” Li laughed when I tried to say it in Vietnamese—probably butchered it.

I thought Nguom Ngao Cave would be a quick walk but it’s huge inside. Cool air hit my face as soon as we stepped in; you could hear water dripping somewhere deep. Minh told stories about how locals hid here during storms—his voice echoed weirdly off all those glittering stalactites. There’s this spot called Four Pillars of Heaven where you look up and everything glows gold if your flashlight hits it right. I touched one of the walls (gently!) and it felt colder than I expected.

The last stretch took us through rice fields that looked almost too green, then suddenly Angel Eye Mountain appeared—a perfect circle punched through its top like some giant had poked his finger there. We watched sunset at Nam Tra waterfall nearby; everyone got quiet for a minute except for one old man fishing downstream who whistled an odd tune. The light went soft and pink over everything. On the way back to Cao Bang city I kept thinking about how Minh said people believe Angel Eye brings luck if you see it at dusk. Maybe that’s true—I still think about that view sometimes when things get noisy back home.
